Advice on my drum loop?

Postby marbles12 » Fri Jul 27, 2012 3:49 am

So I've been reading the thread on adding swing and shuffle to your drums and I've been trying to work on it. I still find it really difficult to come up with drums that have a good swing, I always get confused with the hats. Anyway, I made this sort of "jazzy" drum loop and could really use some advice on what to change/add in it. I used Ableton, I think the reverb on the snares might be a bit too much. The timing might sound a little off too. Any suggestions?

That's actually pretty sick. I only had a couple of listens but the timing doesn't sound off to me. Maybe you've just listened to it too many times while making it and it's put you off?

As you already said, there's too much reverb there. I think the snare could also use some pitch shifting up, maybe. But it sounds cool, really.

I actually really like the reverb. It's more than you'd usually expect with those kinds of drums but I think it really works.

Obviously, it all depends on the creative direction the artist has for the track. Unfortunately, we can't get into other people's heads yet :D .

I feel like it needs a nice clap or shallow snare sort of thing turned up in the mix keeping the pace. I dig it though, i don't think it needs more swing.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll play around with the pitch of the snares and mess around with the reverb a little bit. I probably listened to this way too many times too lie Stealth Elf said.

EDIT: Alright, I decided to stick with the reverb on the snares. I changed the pitch on them a little though and added a hat with different velocities to add a little more shuffle. I should probably use a tambourine though (still looking for a good sample). Anyway, feedback is encouraged! Here's the clip:

It has more swing in the Jazz sense than the Garage sense. Not a band thing though. I think it could use more and varied types of hats.
