I think an important part of the 'bump' in garage is the fact that the beats are higher pitched and the release on snares, ghost snares and claps is punchier and tighter than other genres with increased compression. If I make house my kick will probably sit around 100hz for the thump but if I make garage it will probably be at around 200hz. I dunno if this was purposeful with the original garage boys or a result of the 16+ cut dubplates of US garage.

Personally I feel alot of future garage I hear is tooo swung (and it makes mixes sound clangy.) Its a delicate art and just using silly global swings detracts from the groove in a big way.

Also the tempo point about lowering the speed to increase the silence in between hits is TRUESPEAK.

Most definitely agree with this. It is very.very easy to over do things...

does anyone use Battery3 for their drums / percussion?

i'm pretty new to it but am finding the effects you can put on the hits can give some pretty interesting shuffles...

can you post a sample of this?

I've been enjoying using an arpeggiator on my hats to generate ideas quickly. I like to put 4 perc sounds that are unique - ie open hat, closed hat, maraca and a rim shot...just hold the notes down and set the arp to swing 16 or whatever you prefer. If you have a straight kick and snare going to you can hear the contrast easily. This might be Live specific, but if you swap the order of the sounds you'll get different effects. Also, i'll often leave a spot blank to skip a beat etc.

Another trick would be using the Track Delay to offset sounds by a few ms...nice for giving a vocal or synth a charge ahead of the rest of the track etc. I'll make my kicks drops -3ms to avoid the bass a little more...

Nice one, always interesting to read how different producers have their own little techniques for building beats.

I sent you a PM about this but you haven't responded or taken any action. You paraphrased everyone except me. Please give credit where it's due. I've been doing this shit over a decade and don't appreciate the plagiarism. In the end, I hope my tips help people make what they hear in their head, but at the same time, I'd hope they'd take the time to appreciate my creations as well. A simple plug or a mention would remedy that. Thanks for understanding.

This is my mistake. I checked my sent messages and outbox and it looks like nothing went through.
