In terms of Future Garage in Canada Night Trackin' (a monthly party based in Montreal) has been bringing in some solid names (Floating Points, Martyn, Linkwood, L-Vis 1990 to name a few) http://cargocollective.com/nighttrackin
Garage in general isn't popular in Canada. In Toronto you might find someone spinning FG if there's a Dubstep night. Montreal has definitely been picking it up quicker. There's a great website that lists many raves for Canada: www.purerave.com
Top news stories would be the Vancouver Canucks are up three games to two and about to play game 6 of the Stanley Cup; Canada Post is having rotating strikes; a prostitution case in Ontario; folks criticizing Canada's role in Libya; etc.
The economy is generally good. It's banks were not heavily involved in the sub-prime mortgages or market crash, so it wasn't hurt as badly by the down turn. Housing markets is remarkably strong, dollar is high, and it is getting lots of foreign investment as seems safer than the US, EU, or Japan right now.
Lots of things happen in Canada. Those of note would be on the news pages.
People in Toronto, there will be some freeteks/warehouse jams in the near future that will have some future garage and other future bass music DJ's spinning. I know this because I'll be one of them! Back in Canada for the summer haha
