So what do garage heads read?

And, to ease in with relevance, does anyone know any books that focus on or give an insight on ukg?

Also been digging for various articles in music mags lately. Last one I read is this Artful Dodger interview with Sound On Sound from 2000.

"It's nice being not particularly good at any instrument, but being a mediocre player of quite a few — you can get away with quite different textures. A lot of the tracks have got a Fender Rhodes in, I'm just an absolute sucker for a Fender Rhodes or Wurlitzer sound, so we tend to cane that." -- Mark Hill

I think this article by Simon Reynolds is amazing. It's what made me take garage seriously when I read it a few years back.

Thank you for this. I've printed it out to go through it later but, having just read the first paragraph, it's already making my juices flow..

All the juice squeezed out of Jungle by the post-techstep school of scientific drum 'n' bass has oozed back in the succulent form of two-step.

but seriously ,
this is one of the most interesting books about music and the mind...
Case studies like the guy who got struck by lightening and then found he could compose symphonies,
and a lot of stuff about synaesthesia, seeing sound as colour and taste....

I read tons. Used to be into all kinds of shit but these days I'm pretty obsessed with zombie novels. Some I've read recently are Day By Day Armageddon and the sequel Beyond Exile by J.L. Bourne (amazing if you're into that kinda shit, highly recommend) also Feed by Mira Grant, not quite as good but still pretty decent and Zombie Apocalypse which I've only managed to read half of but it's a bit tiresome. Not really feeling it.

Oddly I've also just read Michael McIntyres autobiography. My girlfriend kept going on about it so in the end I gave in and it is actually a really decent book. Never read a biography before but I could be persuaded to read another.

Just about to start on 'The Curious incident of the Dog in the Night Time' which I'm really not looking forward to but my mum bought it for me so I should really give it a try. She bought it for me though because the main character is autistic and I'm autistic. The hell? How does that figure? If someone was in a car crash you wouldn't buy them a book about car crashes would you?

Zombie novels...interesting,is the genre largely post apoc survival horror ala 'Walking dead' or is there any themed around Voodoo etc...?

My fave voodoo themed novel is 'Falling Angel' by Wiiliam Hjortsberg ,its what the movie Angel Heart was based on...spooky stuff....

Going to add that to my (absolutely huge) Amazon list, sounds interesting.

I enjoyed that one if you're interested to know more about Kurt Cobain.

That's a pretty good read too, considering it's about one of the most jokes American's ever.

That's a captivating title I won't lie. Lol, actually sort of yeh... One of the most attractive things to readers is topics they can relate to!

Interesting, but the nitty gritty is very nitty gritty... :|

Specifically his 'Suspiria de Profundis' (sighs from the depths).

I'm also reading Goethe's 'Die Leiden des jungen Werthers' (The Sorrows of Young Werther), but I've been reading the first few chapters for the last 6 months or so, not really being able to start it due to lacking any kind of attention span.

EDIT: 'Heavier Than Heaven' is a fantastic book. I read it a few years ago (2002 - 2003, it must have been) and it really stuck with me. It opened my eyes to a lot of things that I had been aware of but sheltered from. It really shook me initially but in the long run I felt like I learnt from it.

Hhmm yeh I read it the year it came out, whenever that was... I was a fresh Secondary school teen but it's also stuck with me! Still got it and will be sure to read it again some day :D
