why do you need a distributor to release digital music? just go straight to the shops.

Going straight to the shops is hassle as a) you have to upload each release to each individual shop and b) they usually take 50%

A decent distro will get your tunes into all online stores (not just itunes, djtunes, trackitdown and juno) and will only take about 20-25% tops. Plus its just a matter of sending them the wavs and "artwork" once, and then its job done and you can concentrate on promoting it rather than wasting time uploading things individually

Try approaching somebody like Cargo Records, if the tunes are good enough they'll work with you

so if the shop takes 50% why would you want a distributor taking another 20-25%? thats 75% gone.

thats 25% net. that includes whatever they pay to the shops, as they are a distributer thus their business is distributing. bottom line is if you're serious about distributing your music, get a distro. if you just wanna make tunes and upload them to 5 shops, do it the other way. distributors distribute to 50-100 shops (the good distro's anyway) simply through you sending them one email.

there's approximately £fuckall in selling digital music anyway so it isn't really a major issue, but if you are even remotely serious about running a label/selling your own music, then you really should be looking into a distribution company otherwise you're just another guy uploading tunes to djtunes (no disrespect intended)

its really a no brainer

I havnt actually used these guys yet for distribution so cant speak from experience, but its who plan to use when I get our label set up. http://www.label-worx.com/distribution/

They seem fairly popular with other labels, and when I have used there other services in the past they where very professional .
