Favourite part of writing a track

Postby Rufus_FrequentFlyers » Thu Jul 12, 2012 7:36 am

Thought it might be interesting to hear what everyones favourite part of writing tracks is.
Is it laying down those first chords?
Laying down a bassline?
Doing a final mixdown?

Pretty useless discussion but thought it might be interesting!

Once I have a nice composition, the rest seems to fall into place. Experimenting with harmony is probably the driving force in creating a piece and from there, through improvisation over the chord changes, the melody and bass lines come into shape and the rhythm gets its drums and percussion etc. to match the foundation. So, I guess, getting the harmony is my favourite bit because it usually opens up the rest of the process.

My least favourite part of writing a track is probably 'post-production', which is a shame because I realise how astounding a difference this process can make. I wish I had the ears and skills of a producer like J Dilla whose mixing was such a magical thing that, no matter how awful the music might be (although he never seemed to get it wrong), you just want to keep listening to the sound.

Hmm i dono about my favorite part, probs the bit just after you get ya basic beat down and u got ya chords and you still have loads of ideas, just before the part where you mind goes completely blank and you sit staring at your screen for like 3 hours... haha. i can tell u my least favorite part tho, getting damm kick drums to sound good... literally hours of pain :(

Writing melodies on the keyboard. Find the rest of it pretty boring actually but it's worth it to get to write melodies again.

I like just getting started and getting a beat and some bass going .. Just love to get 4-8 bar grooves going and sometimes if I'm bein lazy that day it may be all I really do. Also like when you have what you think to be your final composition done and you can start getting creative with the mixing, eq, panning etc. It can be tedious but sometimes it's fun to get lost in that world of painting with sound

Drums for sure, followed by little background tinkering melodies or fx.
Otherwise my favourite part of making a tune is hearing the difference mastering has accomplished. ;)

That moment when you realize your idea has become a song. What 3D said, too.

my favourite parts are when the idea finally becomes a song, adding little bits to fit gaps between the main instruments and doing the final touches to the different layers.

Impossible to say really, but it's usually after I get the chords down and the track seems to be taking structure, that the track begins to write itself, that is always fun.
Also, I love adding the little sound effects and atmospheric textural bits and the like. But, I love every part of the process, even mixdown can be fun, but sometimes I find it a chore.

Good responses guys!

It definitely seems that most people have a kind of lightbulb moment when you realise you're idea can become a track. That's def a fave for me but I love laying down a great chord progression, one that you just end up looping endlessly. :D

Mixdown and mastering however really bores me, then exporting and uploading, etc so much hassle involved in finishing tracks to a level Im happy with

My favourite part is definintely making the drums and the rhythm section of a tune. In my mind's eye that really defines a song - even if it's not spectacular. Drums definintely add a whole new level of texture to anything, even if they're only clicks and pops.
