Postby Casset » Tue Jul 31, 2012 7:18 am

Hi, for a while now im trying to crack these kinda lead sounds (running (disclosure remix)) I manage to get them 'stabby' but I cant make them sound so ehm 'sharp' I think is the right word for it.

Sharp = No attack or release time.

this sound eluded me for way too long, then i realised how easy it was.

just a cutoff envelope on some squares (squares for the disclosure sound at least) with a short but noticeable attack, long hold and medium release, the release doesn't matter but its just the shape people choose. it should end up looking like a trapezoid, set the amp/volume envelope so that it has a fast (0 - 5ms) attack and maybe a short release

EDIT: ok this guy explains it a lot better

thanks, but i just do not get the same vibe, does anyone know where to get 90s house stabs of organs or pianos that could sound similar?

Look for samples of the Korg M1 Piano/Organs if you want to get "the real thing".

Again, remember you can take any VST that makes a piano (free Piano One comes to mind) and then just filter it applying no attack, no sustain, little decay and little release. Add some reverb or even some pingpong delay. The effect should work with any kind of piano/organ sound (I think organs make better stabs than pianos anyway).

Jeremy Sylvester has some good sample packs with lot of deep house stabs you're looking for. Also play chords on an analog type synth (or any synth really) and you can get great results too.

Lot of good classic stab and chord presets on z3ta+ 2. If you ever get around to it, the presets Chicago Stack and Detroit Stack are probably the sounds you are thinking of. Well its what I think of when I think oldschool house stab.

I don't know about the z3ta+ because I work on a Mac and I don't think there's a Mac version for it, but the stabs on that tune are made in Ableton's Analog, no big deal, I can tell you how they're done if you'd like.
